Bolsters Bedding
18The bolster, for a decorative touch
In the cushion family, the bolster is often favored for the elegant touch it brings to the bedroom. Also known as a boudin, duffel or cervical cushion, its tubular shape makes it practical for leaning other cushions against, creating a more upright position ideal for reading. Made from a fine fabric with a soft filling, it generally stretches the full length of the bed. Watching TV or reading in bed is more comfortable with this type of cushion. And don't forget the special bolster covers in our bedding department. The bolster is that cylindrical pillow we all met at our grandparents' house. This long pillow isn't just used to liven up pillow fights: it's making a comeback in our bedrooms, because it has a lot going for it. Let's find out why and how to choose it.
Why use a bolster for sleeping?
The reasons for adding a bolster to your bed are as varied as the sleepers themselves. Here are the main reasons to add one to your bedding.
Traditionally placed at the head of the bed, under the pillows, it's ideal for sitting, whether for reading, watching TV, having breakfast in bed, etc.
It can replace or accompany the square or rectangular pillow, to support your head while you sleep, especially if you sleep on your side or have a cold.
You can move it at will throughout the night. It can be used for a wide range of comfort and health purposes: placed under the calves, it relieves long, heavy legs; pregnant women can lean on it to find a comfortable sleeping position; it can be used as a cushion to support the baby during breast-feeding; and finally, you can snuggle up against it to fall asleep more easily.
Last but not least, it adds a refined touch to your bedroom decor, perfectly accentuating the headboard.
How to choose a bolster
There are several criteria to consider when choosing the ideal bolster for your needs: size and shape, materials, firmness and ease of care.
Size and shape: the traditional bolster is cylindrical and its length is equal to the width of the bed. They are available for all bed sizes (90 cm, 120 cm, 140 cm, 160 cm, etc.). If you're sleeping with two people, you can also opt for two independent bolsters for added comfort. Flat models are particularly recommended if you suffer from neck pain.
The bolster cover is generally made of cotton. For the filling, you have a choice of characteristic materials (feathers and down), hollow synthetic fibers and memory foam. Even feather-filled duvets can be treated against dust mites. Memory foam bolsters offer the best support, but are warmer.
Bolsters and pillows come in different firmnesses: soft, medium or firm. Choose according to your preferences and the use you will make of them.
Finally, even if you cover it with a pillowcase that you change regularly, it's important to look after your duvet cover by washing it several times a year. Most models, whatever the type of filling, are machine-washable and tumble-dryable.
